MRCOOL Line Set Guide: Pipe Sizes, Quick Connect and Couplers

By the Cool Mini Splits teamUpdated 6 min read

Which MRCOOL line set fits your unit, and when do you need a coupler?

Short answer: A MRCOOL line set is a pair of copper pipes that comes from the factory already charged with R-454B refrigerant and sealed, with Quick Connect fittings on both ends. Match the pipe size to the indoor unit: 1/4 x 3/8 in for 6K, 9K and 12K, 1/4 x 1/2 in for 18K, and 3/8 x 5/8 in for 24K and 36K. For runs over 50 ft, two sets are joined with a coupler kit in the matching size.

This MRCOOL line set guide covers what the pre-charged line set does, which pipe size each indoor unit needs, and what the coupler kit is for. Every line we sell ships with a pre-charged set in the box: 11.5 ft with DIY Select and DIY EasyPro, 25 ft with the DIY 5th Gen single zone. Longer runs work on all three with MRCOOL's separate pre-charged line sets and coupler kits. On a Select or EasyPro, check the line set chart in your system's manual for the exact part.

If you're still working out how many feet each room needs, our line set length guide walks through the measuring. This page is about getting the right part once you know the length.

What is a MRCOOL pre-charged line set?

Every mini split moves refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units through two insulated copper pipes, a smaller one and a larger one. On a MRCOOL DIY system those pipes arrive filled with refrigerant and capped at the factory.

The ends are Quick Connect fittings. You thread each one onto its matching port on the indoor and outdoor units and tighten it with wrenches. A torque wrench helps you tighten them the way the installation manual describes.

That's the whole refrigerant side of the install. There's no vacuum pump, no set of gauges and no HVAC tech involved.

Pay attention to how each fitting is started by hand and then tightened, because that is the whole refrigerant hookup.

Why does a pre-charged line set matter for a DIY install?

On a standard mini split, the installer flares the copper ends, connects them, pulls the system into a deep vacuum, checks it with gauges and then releases the refrigerant. That work calls for tools most homeowners don't own and, in the US, a tech certified to handle refrigerant.

The pre-charged set skips all of it. For a homeowner with a drill, a level and a free Saturday, that is the difference between doing the job and hiring it out. Our Quick Connect vs flare article compares the two methods in more detail.

There are honest trade-offs, too:

  • Lengths are fixed at 16, 25, 35 and 50 ft. You can't cut a set to size, so any extra gets coiled.
  • A pre-charged set costs more than a roll of plain copper, from $227 for 16 ft (prices as of November 2026).
  • The longest run is 75 ft, using two sets and a coupler.
  • The electrical side still needs a dedicated circuit, breaker and disconnect, and many towns want a licensed electrician for that part.

Which line set size fits which indoor unit?

Pipe size follows the BTU size of the indoor unit, whether it's a wall unit or a ceiling cassette.

Indoor unit size Line set pipe size Coupler kit for runs over 50 ft
6K, 9K, 12K 1/4 x 3/8 in 6K to 18K kit, $425
18K 1/4 x 1/2 in 6K to 18K kit, $425
24K, 36K 3/8 x 5/8 in 24K and 36K kit, $455

Bigger pipe costs more. A 16 ft set in 3/8 x 5/8 in is $271, against $227 for the smallest size.

How does this work on a multi-zone system?

On a DIY 5th Gen multi-zone, every room has its own line set, and each one is sized for that room's indoor unit. The outdoor unit's size doesn't decide it.

For example, a 36K outdoor unit running a 6K office, two 9K bedrooms and a 12K living room takes four sets in 1/4 x 3/8 in. Swap the living room unit for an 18K and that one room's set changes to 1/4 x 1/2 in, while the other three stay the same.

A set in the wrong size won't fit that unit's connections. With shipping at 2 to 4 business days to leave our Kentucky warehouse after the order is verified, plus 3 to 7 days in transit (an estimate set by the freight company, not a guarantee), a mix-up can cost you a week or more, so check the size for every room before you order.

Next: how long should each line set be?

What is the MRCOOL coupler kit, and when do you need one?

The coupler kit joins two pre-charged line sets end to end. It's the only way to go past 50 ft:

  • 66 ft: a 50 ft set plus a 16 ft set, joined with one kit.
  • 75 ft: a 50 ft set plus a 25 ft set, joined with one kit. This is the maximum.

The kit comes in two versions. The $425 kit is for 6K to 18K units, and the $455 kit is for 24K and 36K units. Both include 75 ft of MC-5 cable, enough to reach the full length of the longest allowed run.

Both line sets you're joining need to be the same pipe size, and the coupler kit has to match them. A 50 ft and a 25 ft set for a 24K room, for example, are both 3/8 x 5/8 in, joined with the $455 kit.

Watch: MRCOOL DIY Line Set Extension Coupler Kits (MRCOOL, 2:33)

It shows how two pre-charged sets meet at the coupler, so you know what the joint looks like before you plan a 66 or 75 ft run.

Plan a coupler only when you need it. A run that fits on a single 50 ft set costs less and has one fewer joint to make.

What should you have on your list before you order?

  • The indoor unit size for each room, and the pipe size from the table above.
  • The length for each room, taken from your measurements.
  • A coupler kit in the matching size for any room over 50 ft.
  • What your system already includes: 11.5 ft with DIY Select and DIY EasyPro, 25 ft with a DIY 5th Gen single zone, a length you pick per room on 2- and 3-room multi-zone systems, and 16 ft per room on 4- to 6-room systems.
  • A LineGuard cover kit ($129 for 12 ft, 4.5 in, in white, gray or tan) for the part of the run on the outside wall.
  • A 3 in hole saw for the wall (a core bit for brick or block), plus wrenches.
  • The outdoor parts no system includes: a $59 disconnect switch, a $72 whip, and a $172 pad or a wall bracket.

Every line set on our store is listed on the pre-charged line set page, where you pick the length and pipe size.

What if my situation is different?

What if I already have copper lines from an old system?

They won't connect to the Quick Connect fittings as a DIY job. Reusing them would mean flared connections, a vacuum pump and gauges, which is HVAC tech work. For a DIY install, plan on new MRCOOL pre-charged sets.

What if I have a spare line set from an older MRCOOL DIY unit?

Older MRCOOL DIY systems ran on R-410A, and current systems use R-454B. Their line sets are different products, so order R-454B sets for any system you buy from us today. Our R-454B article explains the change.

What if I change the indoor unit size later?

Moving between size groups means a new line set. Going from a 9K to a 12K keeps the same 1/4 x 3/8 in set, but going from a 12K to an 18K needs a 1/4 x 1/2 in set.

What should you do next?

Write down each room with its indoor unit size, pipe size and measured length. That short list is everything you need to order the right line sets the first time.

Questions people ask

What size line set does a 12K MRCOOL mini split need?

A 12K indoor unit uses a 1/4 x 3/8 in line set, the same as 6K and 9K units. An 18K unit steps up to 1/4 x 1/2 in.

What size line set does a 24K or 36K MRCOOL need?

Both use a 3/8 x 5/8 in line set. For runs over 50 ft they also need the larger coupler kit, which is $455.

Do MRCOOL DIY line sets need to be vacuumed?

No. They come pre-charged with R-454B and sealed, so you connect the Quick Connect fittings without a vacuum pump, gauges or an HVAC tech.

Can I use a regular copper line set with a MRCOOL DIY mini split?

Not as a DIY job. Plain copper needs flared connections, a vacuum pump and gauges, which is work for an HVAC tech.

What does the MRCOOL coupler kit include?

It joins two pre-charged line sets to reach 66 or 75 ft, and it includes 75 ft of MC-5 cable. It comes in a $425 version for 6K to 18K units and a $455 version for 24K and 36K units.
