How BTU limits work

Indoor units share the outdoor unit's capacity. Say your outdoor unit handles 18,000 BTU and you have two 12,000 BTU air handlers: if both run at full power together, they split the 18,000 BTU between them.

If you usually run one room at a time, a smaller outdoor unit can be enough. If you run every room together, pick an outdoor unit that covers the total.

Example: 3 rooms 27K outdoor unit$2,100 + 3 × 9K air handlers$1,596 + 3 × 16 ft line sets$681 3-room system$4,377
