MRCOOL vs Budget Mini Split Brands: What the Extra Money Buys

By the Cool Mini Splits teamUpdated 5 min read

Is MRCOOL better than cheaper mini split brands?

Short answer: Against budget AC brands sold online, the box price often favors the budget kit. What the extra money buys is the pre-charged Quick Connect line set, a warranty that covers your own install once you register it, and a US support and dealer network. If price is the main concern, the budget MRCOOL is the DIY Select, from $1,249 (prices as of November 2026).

We won't name budget brands here, because their lineups change every season and some are better than others. Instead, here's what to check on any low-priced mini split, and where each MRCOOL DIY line fits against it.

What do you usually get in a budget mini split kit?

Most low-priced mini splits sold online are ordinary split systems. The outdoor unit holds the refrigerant, and the line set arrives empty with flare nuts on each end.

To install one the standard way, someone has to tighten the flares to spec, connect a vacuum pump and gauge, pull the lines down to a deep vacuum, watch that the vacuum holds, and only then open the valves. That takes a vacuum pump, a micron gauge, a manifold and a torque wrench, plus the know-how to read them.

Some budget brands also sell their own pre-charged "DIY" kits with quick connectors. Those can work well. The questions below still apply, especially the warranty fine print.

Why does the connection type matter so much?

A flare joint that's a little loose doesn't fail on day one. It leaks slowly, and you find out weeks later when the room stops cooling. Moisture left in the lines from a short vacuum does its damage inside the compressor, where you can't see it.

MRCOOL DIY line sets are filled with R-454B and sealed at the factory. You thread the Quick Connect fittings onto each unit and tighten them, and there's no vacuum step to get wrong. That's the core of what you're paying for.

Refrigerant is the other thing to check. Under EPA rules, new home AC and heat pump equipment made since 2025 has moved off R-410A to lower-GWP refrigerants like R-454B. Older R-410A stock can still turn up online, so read the spec sheet before you buy.

What should you ask about any budget mini split?

Put these questions to any brand before you order. Our answers for MRCOOL DIY are in the right column.

Question What to look for MRCOOL DIY
Is the line set pre-charged? If not, budget for a tech or the tools Yes, Quick Connect, no vacuum
Does the warranty cover a homeowner install? Many flare kits require a licensed HVAC install for full coverage Yes, for the original owner once registered
Is registration required, and by when? A deadline you can miss Yes; see the warranty document for the deadline
Which refrigerant? R-454B or another current refrigerant R-454B
What line set lengths can you get? Pre-charged lines can't be cut, so lengths matter 16, 25, 35, 50 ft; 66 and 75 ft with a coupler kit
Where do replacement parts and support come from? A US support line and parts on this side of the ocean MRCOOL support in Hickory, Kentucky, at support.mrcool.com
Who sells it? An authorized dealer, so the warranty isn't in question Authorized dealers like us, at MAP

If a budget brand gives you clear, written answers to all seven, it may be a fair buy. If the warranty answer is "licensed install required," price the HVAC tech into the comparison.

Where does each MRCOOL DIY line fit against a budget kit?

Here's the 12K size side by side, good for a room up to about 550 sq ft:

12K single zone DIY Select DIY EasyPro DIY 5th Gen
Price $1,399 $1,599 $2,359
SEER2 range for the line 16.5 to 17.5 18.9 to 20.2 18.0 to 23.6
Heats down to −13°F −13°F −13°F
Line set in the box 11.5 ft 11.5 ft 25 ft
Leak detection No Yes Yes
Warranty parts / compressor 1 yr / 2 yr 3 yr / 5 yr, lifetime option 5 yr / 7 yr, lifetime option

The DIY Select is the one that competes on price: 9K $1,249, 12K $1,399, 18K $1,690, 24K $1,899, in white or black. Be honest with yourself about its weak spot. One year on parts and two on the compressor is short, and some budget kits list longer coverage on paper.

If that bothers you, the DIY EasyPro costs $238 more at 9K and gives you 3 years parts, 5 years compressor, leak detection, a Gold Fin coated coil and ENERGY STAR on the 12K to 24K. The lifetime compressor option on EasyPro and 5th Gen needs registration and MRCOOL's paid Care program.

Select and EasyPro ship with 11.5 ft of line set. A longer run still works with a separate pre-charged line set, but it adds cost, while the 5th Gen includes 25 ft. Check the line set chart in your system's manual for the exact part.

What if one of these sounds like you?

What if I already own a vacuum pump and gauges?

Then a flare-connection kit is a reasonable choice, as long as its warranty doesn't require a licensed installer. People with HVAC experience save money that way. Most homeowners don't have the tools or the practice, and that's who MRCOOL DIY is for.

What if a budget kit has a longer warranty?

Read the conditions, not the headline number. Look for a licensed-install requirement, a registration deadline, and who pays for shipping parts. A long warranty you can't claim is worth less than a short one you can.

What if I see MRCOOL cheaper on a marketplace?

Authorized dealers sell at MRCOOL's minimum advertised price, so a much lower price is worth questioning. See why an authorized dealer matters for your warranty, and our price match policy.

What if I live near the coast?

Salt air is hard on outdoor coils. The Gold Fin corrosion coating comes on EasyPro and 5th Gen, not on Select, which is a good reason to step up one line.

What should you do next?

Size the room with our sizing guide, then measure the line set path from the indoor unit to the outdoor spot. Those two numbers tell you whether the DIY Select at that size is enough, or whether EasyPro or 5th Gen is the better spend.

Questions people ask

Is MRCOOL better than cheaper mini split brands?

MRCOOL DIY costs more than many budget kits, but it comes with pre-charged Quick Connect line sets and a warranty that covers a registered homeowner install. A budget kit can be a fair buy if its warranty covers DIY and you have the tools for flare connections.

What is the cheapest MRCOOL mini split?

The DIY Select 9K, at $1,249 as of November 2026. It covers a small room, runs on 115V on its own dedicated circuit, and has a 1 year parts and 2 year compressor warranty.

Do budget mini splits need a vacuum pump?

Most budget kits with flare connections do: the lines must be evacuated with a vacuum pump and gauge before the valves are opened. Pre-charged quick connect systems like MRCOOL DIY skip that step.

Does installing a budget mini split myself void the warranty?

It depends on the brand. Many flare-connection kits require a licensed HVAC install for full coverage, so read the warranty before you buy.

What refrigerant do MRCOOL DIY systems use?

R-454B, in all three lines we sell: DIY Select, DIY EasyPro and DIY 5th Gen.
