MRCOOL DIY 18K BTU Mini Split: ENERGY STAR Options, Room Size and 230V

By the Cool Mini Splits teamUpdated 5 min read

What size room does an 18,000 BTU mini split cool?

Short answer: An 18K BTU mini split fits a space of about 600 to 800 sq ft, and every 18K we sell needs a 230V circuit. If you want ENERGY STAR, the DIY EasyPro 18K is certified, including the Cold Climate designation. All three lines keep heating down to −13°F outside; below that, keep a backup heat source.

The 18K is where a mini split stops being a bedroom unit and starts handling the big rooms: a living room, a finished basement, a two-car garage shop. It's also the size where the wiring changes, so it's worth understanding before you order.

What size room does an 18,000 BTU mini split cover?

At 20 to 25 BTU per square foot, 18,000 BTU covers about 720 to 900 sq ft with 8 ft ceilings. Our 5th Gen 18K listing names 800 sq ft as the max, which matches an average room.

In practice, most 18K rooms we see fall between 600 and 800 sq ft:

  • A 24 x 28 ft living room, 672 sq ft
  • A finished basement rec room around 750 sq ft
  • A 24 x 24 ft garage shop with decent insulation
  • An open kitchen and dining area of about 550 sq ft, once you add about 4,000 BTU for the kitchen

That last one surprises people. A 550 sq ft space would be a 12K on area alone, but cooking heat pushes it to about 16,000 BTU.

Which 18K MRCOOL DIY mini splits are ENERGY STAR certified?

The DIY EasyPro 18K is ENERGY STAR certified, and it also carries the Cold Climate designation, which ENERGY STAR gives heat pumps that meet its tests for cold weather performance. The DIY Select 18K is not certified. For the DIY 5th Gen 18K, check the ENERGY STAR listing for the exact model.

Why it matters: some utilities and state programs only pay rebates on ENERGY STAR or cold climate certified equipment. Call yours, or check its website, before you buy, because the rules vary a lot.

At 18K, the complete systems run from $1,690 for the Select to $2,909 for the regular 5th Gen (prices as of November 2026).

The EasyPro costs only $116 more than the Select at 18K, which makes it the easy recommendation for most people who don't need the 5th Gen. Look at the DIY EasyPro system for details.

Why does an 18K mini split need 230V?

The 9K and 12K run on 115V. From 18K up, the compressor is big enough that MRCOOL builds it for 230V, on all three lines.

A 230V circuit uses a double-pole breaker, which takes two spaces in your panel. Most American homes already have 240V service for a dryer or range, so the power is there. What you need to check is open panel space and the distance from the panel to where the outdoor unit will sit.

  • Two open breaker spaces in your panel, or room to add them.
  • A dedicated circuit for the mini split only, with breaker and wire sized from the installation manual for your size.
  • A disconnect within sight of the outdoor unit. Our 60A non-fused disconnect is $59, and the non-metallic whip from disconnect to outdoor unit is $72.
  • A permit if your town requires one, typically about $50 to $300.

Many states and towns require a licensed electrician for the panel side. Even confident DIYers often hire that part out and do the rest themselves. The 5th Gen's DIYPro armored cable needs no conduit, which saves some work on the run between units.

What does an 18K cost to run?

Divide 18,000 by the SEER2 to get average watts at full output. At a SEER2 of 19, that's about 950 watts. Multiply by hours run and your rate per kWh for a monthly estimate; our 12K article walks through a full example.

What if my winters drop below −13°F?

All three 18K lines keep heating down to −13°F outside. Plan for more if your winters regularly drop below that, or the mini split will be the main heat in a place that gets close to it. Think northern Minnesota, upstate New York, or a mountain cabin.

If your coldest nights bottom out around 0°F to 10°F, any of our 18Ks will keep heating, though its output drops as the temperature falls. Plan on a backup heat source for the worst week, and lean toward the EasyPro with its Cold Climate certification or the regular 5th Gen.

Below −13°F, that backup is a must, or size up to the 24K. Call us for cold-climate sizing before you order.

Next: Single zone or multi-zone, which one fits your home?

What line set does an 18K use?

The 18K indoor unit takes a 1/4 x 1/2 in line set. Select and EasyPro ship with 11.5 ft in the box, and the 5th Gen ships with 25 ft.

A run longer than 11.5 ft does not rule out the Select or EasyPro. Separate pre-charged line sets in the matching pipe size extend all three lines the same way; check the line set chart in your system's manual for the exact part. The difference is cost: a 12 to 25 ft run means buying a longer set for the Select or EasyPro, while the 5th Gen already covers it.

Line sets are pre-charged and can't be cut, so you coil any extra neatly behind the outdoor unit. They come in 16, 25, 35 and 50 ft, and a coupler kit ($425 for 6K to 18K) joins two sets for 66 or 75 ft. 75 ft is the max. Measure your route along the wall, not in a straight line, before you choose.

Watch how the Quick Connect fittings go together, since this is the step that replaces the vacuum pump and gauges on every size.

What if an 18K is too big or too small?

For a room around 400 to 500 sq ft with normal ceilings, drop to a 12K. You'll avoid short cycling and stay on 115V.

For a space over about 900 sq ft, or an 800 sq ft room with a 10 ft ceiling, step up to the 24K. At that size the extra capacity matters more than the price gap.

Don't confuse the 18K single zone with the 18K multi-zone outdoor unit. That one runs 2 or 3 small rooms using 6K, 9K and 12K indoor units, and it's a different system. Our article on the 18K multi-zone covers it.

Ready to order your 18K?

Measure the room and ceiling, then check your panel for two open spaces and talk to an electrician if your town requires one. Measure the line set route too, since anything past 11.5 ft adds a longer line set to the cost of a Select or EasyPro.

Compare all the 18K systems in our 18K single zone collection. If you're between an 18K and a 24K, call +1 (844) 999-9725, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM EST, and we'll go over the room with you.

Questions people ask

What size room will an 18,000 BTU mini split cool?

About 600 to 800 sq ft with 8 ft ceilings. Our 5th Gen 18K listing gives 800 sq ft as the max, and a kitchen, strong sun or a high ceiling lowers that.

Is the MRCOOL DIY 18K ENERGY STAR certified?

The DIY EasyPro 18K is ENERGY STAR certified, including the Cold Climate designation. The DIY Select 18K is not, and for the DIY 5th Gen check the ENERGY STAR listing for your model.

Does an 18,000 BTU mini split need 220 volts?

Yes. Every MRCOOL DIY 18K we sell runs on 230V and needs its own dedicated circuit with a double-pole breaker. Breaker and wire sizes are in the installation manual.

How much electricity does an 18,000 BTU mini split use?

At full output, divide 18,000 by the SEER2 to get average watts, so about 950 watts at a SEER2 of 19. An inverter runs below full output most of the time, so typical draw is lower.

Do I need a vacuum pump for a MRCOOL DIY 18K?

No. All three DIY lines use pre-charged Quick Connect line sets, so there's no vacuum pump, gauges or refrigerant charging.
