What a DIY Mini Split Really Costs in 2026: 1-Room and 4-Room Totals

By the Cool Mini Splits teamUpdated 6 min read

What does a DIY mini split really cost, all in?

Short answer: Expect the system price plus about $390 to $430 in parts most people need, plus an electrician and a permit. With our prices that's roughly $2,100 to $2,900 for a 12K DIY Select room, $3,100 to $3,900 for a 12K DIY 5th Gen room, and $6,200 to $7,000 for a 4-room DIY 5th Gen system. The line items are below so you can swap in your own numbers.

What's in the box, and what isn't?

Every MRCOOL DIY single zone system comes with the indoor unit, the outdoor unit, a remote and a pre-charged Quick Connect line set. DIY Select and DIY EasyPro include an 11.5 ft line set. The DIY 5th Gen includes 25 ft.

What no system includes:

  • A disconnect switch by the outdoor unit (code requires one within sight of it)
  • The whip that runs from the disconnect to the outdoor unit
  • A pad or wall bracket for the outdoor unit
  • A line set cover for the outside wall
  • The breaker and the wire from your panel

Those gaps are where most budget surprises come from. Here's what each one costs in our store.

How much are the extra parts?

Part Price from Who needs it
Disconnect switch, 60A non-fused $59 Everyone
Non-metallic whip $72 Everyone
Equipment pad (E Lite) $172 Ground-mounted outdoor unit
Condenser wall bracket $127 (9K to 18K), $147 (24K and 36K) Wall-mounted outdoor unit
LineGuard cover kit, 12 ft $129 Anyone who wants the lines covered outside
Extra line set 16 ft $227, 25 ft $264, 35 ft $502, 50 ft $587 Runs longer than the included set, on any of the three lines
Coupler kit $425 (6K to 18K), $455 (24K and 36K) Runs of 66 or 75 ft
Watch: MRCOOL DIY Line Set Extension Coupler Kits (MRCOOL, 2:33)

Watch what the coupler kit adds to a long run, so you know whether that line item belongs in your budget.

All prices are from our store (prices as of November 2026). Bigger pipe sizes cost more on line sets, so a 16 ft line set for a 24K or 36K unit is $271.

Pick either the pad or the bracket, not both. With the disconnect, whip and one cover kit, the extras come to $387 with a small bracket and $432 with a pad.

What does a single zone cost, start to finish?

Two common jobs: a 12K bedroom or office on the budget line, and the same room on the top line. Both are 115V, so the circuit is a simple one.

Line item 12K DIY Select 12K DIY 5th Gen
System $1,399 $2,359
Disconnect + whip $131 $131
Mount $127 wall bracket $172 pad
LineGuard cover kit $129 $129
Parts total $1,786 $2,791
Electrician, typical $300 to $800 $300 to $800
Permit, typical $50 to $300 $50 to $300
All in $2,136 to $2,886 $3,141 to $3,891

This assumes the Select's 11.5 ft line set reaches. For a run of 12 to 25 ft, add a longer pre-charged line set to the Select column, from $227 for 16 ft or $264 for 25 ft, and check the line set chart in the Select manual for the exact part. The 5th Gen already has 25 ft in the box, so the same run costs it nothing extra.

The electrician range is what a straightforward dedicated circuit typically costs. A panel far from the outdoor unit, a full panel, or a run through finished walls pushes it higher. Ask for a written quote that includes the breaker and wire.

The $960 gap between those two systems buys a lot: higher efficiency, leak detection, Follow Me, a 25 ft line set, and a 5 year parts / 7 year compressor warranty instead of 1 year / 2 years. Our line-by-line buying guide covers whether that's worth it for your room. In between sits the DIY EasyPro at $1,599 for 12K.

Next: which parts of the install can you do yourself, and which should you hire?

What does a 4-room system cost?

Multi-zone is DIY 5th Gen only. A 4-room wall unit system starts at $4,836 and comes with a 16 ft line set per room. In real houses at least one room is usually farther away, so this example adds one 35 ft line set.

Line item 4-room DIY 5th Gen, wall units
System (outdoor unit, 4 air handlers, four 16 ft line sets) $4,836
One 35 ft line set for the far room $502
Disconnect + whip $131
Equipment pad $172
Two LineGuard cover kits $258
Parts total $5,899
Electrician, 230V circuit, typical $300 to $800
Permit, typical $50 to $300
All in $6,249 to $6,999

One outdoor unit means one circuit, one disconnect and one pad, which is why multi-zone parts costs grow slowly as you add rooms. What grows fast is line set length. Measure every room before you order with our line set length guide.

Shop the room counts in the multi-zone collection. Prices from: 2 rooms $2,923, 3 rooms $3,607, 4 rooms $4,836, 6 rooms $7,332. Cassette systems cost more, from $4,633 for 2 rooms.

How does that compare to a professional install?

National cost guides put a typical pro-installed single zone mini split around $3,000, with quotes ranging from about $2,000 to well over $10,000 depending on brand, size and the house. Pro-installed multi-zone systems typically run from under $3,000 for a small 2-room job to $18,000 or more, and installers commonly figure a few thousand dollars per zone.

Job DIY with our prices Typical pro quote
One 12K room, budget line $2,136 to $2,886 Around $3,000
One 12K room, top line $3,141 to $3,891 Around $3,000, higher for premium brands
Three rooms (national range) From $3,607 for the system $3,400 to $13,400
Four rooms $6,249 to $6,999 A few thousand dollars per room
Five rooms (national range) From $5,963 for the system $4,800 to $18,000

Be honest with the single room math. If a local installer quotes you $3,000 for a budget brand, a DIY 5th Gen doesn't save money on that one room. You'd be paying for its efficiency and warranty, plus your own day of work.

The DIY savings get large on multi-room jobs when local quotes land in the middle or top of those ranges. Get one or two local quotes anyway. They take an hour and show you which side of the line you're on.

Next: how do you find and vet a local electrician or installer?

What costs catch people off guard?

What if my panel is full?

Then the electrician's number can grow well past the typical range, because you may need a subpanel or a service upgrade. Take a photo of your panel with the door open and send it with the quote request.

What if I don't own the tools?

Most people have the drill, level and wrenches. The usual purchases are a 3 in hole saw, a torque wrench, and a core bit if the wall is brick or block. Budget for them before you order, not on install day.

What if I order the wrong size?

That's the most expensive mistake on this list. A change-of-mind return loses the 3% card fee, shipping both ways and MRCOOL's 10% restocking fee. On a $2,359 system that's about $71 plus $236, before freight. Size it first with the sizing guide.

What about shipping and tax?

Shipping is free to the 48 contiguous states. Hawaii and Alaska ship by quote. We charge sales tax only in CA and WA. Orders leave our Kentucky warehouse in 2 to 4 business days after the order is verified, then spend 3 to 7 days in transit.

Build your own budget

Write down the system price for your size, add $131 for the disconnect and whip, add a pad or bracket, add a cover kit per outside run, then get an electrician quote and call the building department about the permit fee. That's your real number.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to install a mini split yourself?

For one 12K room, plan on roughly $2,100 to $3,900 all in, depending on the line you pick, including parts, a typical electrician visit and a permit. The system itself is the biggest piece.

How much does an electrician charge to wire a mini split?

A straightforward dedicated circuit typically runs a few hundred dollars, often $300 to $800. Long runs from the panel, a full panel or finished walls cost more.

Is a DIY mini split cheaper than a professional install?

Usually, and the gap gets bigger with more rooms. On a single room, a low local quote for a budget brand can come close to the cost of a top-line DIY system, so it pays to get a quote.

Do I need to buy a disconnect switch for a mini split?

Yes. Code requires a disconnect within sight of the outdoor unit, and none of the MRCOOL DIY systems include one. Ours is $59, and the whip that connects it to the unit is $72.

How much does a 4-zone mini split cost to install DIY?

Our 4-room DIY 5th Gen wall system starts at $4,836. With a longer line set for one room, a disconnect, whip, pad, covers, an electrician and a permit, a typical total runs about $6,200 to $7,000.
