How long does a MRCOOL DIY mini split last, and how long is the warranty?
Short answer: Major HVAC makers put a well-kept mini split at about 10 to 15 years, with some lasting 20. MRCOOL DIY warranty years are shorter than that: the DIY Select has 1 year on parts and 2 on the compressor, the DIY EasyPro 3 and 5, and the DIY 5th Gen 5 and 7, with a paid lifetime compressor option on the last two. Filters, placement and correct sizing decide where in that range your system lands.
People ask us two things in one breath: how long does a MRCOOL DIY mini split last, and how long does the warranty last. They are different numbers, and the space between them is what you are really deciding on when you pick a line. This article covers both.
How many years does a mini split usually last?
Carrier says a quality mini split generally lasts 10 to 15 years, and that 20 or more is possible. Bryant puts the typical range at 12 to 15 years, with some premium models reaching 20. MRCOOL doesn't publish its own lifespan figure that we can point you to, so we use that industry range.
"Lasts" usually means the compressor and coils are still healthy. Smaller parts like a fan motor, a sensor or a control board can fail earlier and be replaced, and a mini split that has had one board swapped is still a working system with years left.
The range is wide because conditions are wide. A unit in a dry inland bedroom with clean filters lives a different life than one on a beach house deck that runs nearly every day of the year.
How long is the warranty on each MRCOOL DIY line?
Here is how warranty years line up against a 12-year life, a fair middle of the range. Prices are single zone, from (prices as of November 2026).
| Line | Price, from | Parts | Compressor | Years of a 12-year life with no compressor coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY Select | $1,249 | 1 yr | 2 yr | 10 years |
| DIY EasyPro | $1,487 | 3 yr | 5 yr, lifetime option | 7 years, or none with MRCOOL Care |
| DIY 5th Gen | $2,329 | 5 yr | 7 yr, lifetime option | 5 years, or none with MRCOOL Care |
The lifetime option needs registration and continuous enrollment in MRCOOL's paid Care program. Coverage starts at your purchase date, not your install date, so a system sitting in the garage for six months is burning warranty time.

What shortens a mini split's life?
Salt air and corrosive air
Near the ocean, salt eats at outdoor coil fins. Pool chemical storage and dryer vents blowing on the unit do similar damage. The DIY EasyPro and DIY 5th Gen have the Gold Fin corrosion coating on the outdoor coil, and the DIY Select doesn't. MRCOOL's warranty excludes damage from corrosive environments, so on the coast the coating matters twice.
Dirty filters
A clogged filter chokes airflow. The fan works harder, the coil runs colder in cool mode and can ice, and dust that slips past ends up on the coil and blower wheel. Carrier recommends cleaning indoor filters monthly, and so do we.
Oversizing
An inverter slows down to match the room, but a unit that is far too big for the space still starts and stops more often and pulls less moisture out of summer air. A 24K in a 300 sq ft bedroom is the classic mistake. Our sizing guide walks through picking the right BTU per room.
A buried or flooded outdoor unit
Snow drifts, leaves, mulch piled against the cabinet and puddles that freeze around the base all make the outdoor unit work harder. In heat mode it also needs room to shed defrost water. An equipment pad (from $172) or a wall bracket (from $127) lifts it clear.
Running it in a construction zone
Drywall dust is fine powder that packs into coils. MRCOOL's warranty excludes units operated in incomplete structures, so finish the sanding before you run the system, or cover the indoor unit and leave it off.
How do I get the most years out of my MRCOOL?
- Rinse the indoor filters about once a month, more often with pets or in a kitchen.
- Clean the indoor coil once or twice a year with a no-rinse coil cleaner made for mini splits.
- Hose off the outdoor coil gently each spring and fall. Never use a pressure washer.
- Keep plants, snow and stored stuff back from the outdoor unit. The installation manual for your size lists the clearances.
- Mount the outdoor unit on a pad or bracket, never on bare dirt.
- Size each room correctly instead of buying one size up "to be safe".
- Register the system the week you install it and keep your receipt and install photos.
- Decide on MRCOOL Care at install time if you bought an EasyPro or 5th Gen and plan to keep it past the standard warranty.

What if my situation is different?
What if I live on the coast?
Skip the DIY Select. Pick the DIY EasyPro or DIY 5th Gen for the Gold Fin coil, mount the outdoor unit on the side of the house away from the ocean breeze if you can, and rinse it with fresh water more often.
What if it is going in a dusty garage or workshop?
Plan on cleaning filters every two weeks while you are sawing or sanding. Dust is the main thing that shortens a shop unit's life.
What if I run it all year in a hot, humid climate?
Along the Gulf Coast a mini split can be cooling nine or ten months a year. More run hours load the filters faster and grow more slime on the coil and in the drain line. Rinse filters every two to three weeks in peak season and book a professional deep clean of the coil and blower wheel once a year.
What if my old system is 12 years old and still runs?
Keep it running. When a repair comes up after the warranty ends, compare the quote to a new system. A new 12K DIY Select is from $1,399, so a big compressor bill on an old unit often points to replacement.
What if I plan to sell the house in five years?
The Select and EasyPro warranty documents say coverage is non-transferable and stays with the original registered owner. Buyers still value a newer system, so keep the receipt and install photos to hand over with the house.
What should I do next?
