What does the MRCOOL DIY warranty cover on each line?
Short answer: The DIY Select comes with 1 year on parts and 2 years on the compressor. The DIY EasyPro gets 3 and 5 years, and the DIY 5th Gen gets 5 and 7 years, and both of those can add a lifetime compressor option through registration and MRCOOL's paid Care program. No MRCOOL DIY warranty pays for labor, so the longer parts term is worth more than it first looks.
Most people shop MRCOOL DIY warranties last, after price and size. We think it should be closer to first, because the gap between the three lines is wide: the same 12K room can come with 1 year of parts coverage or 5, depending on which box you buy. Here is how the coverage compares and how it can save you money, or not.
What does each MRCOOL DIY warranty cover?
These terms come from MRCOOL's current warranty documents for each line. Prices are single zone, from (prices as of November 2026).
| DIY Select | DIY EasyPro | DIY 5th Gen | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single zone price | from $1,249 | from $1,487 | from $2,329 |
| Parts | 1 year | 3 years | 5 years |
| Compressor | 2 years | 5 years | 7 years |
| Lifetime compressor option | No | Yes, with registration and MRCOOL Care | Yes, with registration and MRCOOL Care |
| Pre-charged line set counted as a part | Yes | No, the EasyPro document excludes line sets from parts | Yes |
| Labor | Not covered | Not covered | Not covered |
| Clock starts | Proof-of-purchase date | ||
| Multi-zone available | No | No | Yes, same 5 and 7 years |
"Parts" means everything except the compressor: the remote, the Wi-Fi dongle, the fan motors, boards and sensors in both units. That list matters, because it covers nearly every part a handy owner could swap with a screwdriver and the manual.
Why does a longer parts warranty matter on a mini split?
MRCOOL supplies the replacement part. You or your tech put it in, and that labor is never covered on any of the three lines. With a DIY system, many owners swap an indoor board or a remote themselves, so a covered part often means a near-zero repair bill.
Now do the math on one room. A 12K DIY Select is $1,399 and a 12K EasyPro is $1,599. That $200 buys two more years of parts and three more on the compressor, plus leak detection and Follow Me. A 12K DIY 5th Gen is $2,359, or $960 more than the Select, and you get four extra parts years, five extra compressor years and higher efficiency. The 5th Gen also has 25 ft of line set in the box instead of 11.5 ft. A Select or EasyPro can still reach a longer run with a separate MRCOOL pre-charged line set, but that is an extra purchase.
The DIY Select is still the right call for some people: a garage, a rental you plan to sell, a shop you heat a few weekends a year. Just buy it knowing the coverage is short.
Next: how do you register a MRCOOL DIY system, step by step?
How does the MRCOOL lifetime compressor option work?
It is available on the DIY EasyPro and DIY 5th Gen only. You register the system, then enroll in the MRCOOL Care program and keep paying for it. MRCOOL's Care brochure (version dated July 2025) lists these terms:
- $14.99 a month, with a cleaning kit shipped each year.
- If the compressor fails while you are enrolled and still inside the standard warranty, MRCOOL sends a full outdoor unit.
- If it fails after the standard warranty ends, while you are still enrolled, MRCOOL sends a full system.
- Miss the payments and coverage ends for good. It can't be reinstated.
Is it worth it? Be honest with the numbers. $14.99 a month is about $180 a year, or about $1,800 over ten years. On a single 12K 5th Gen at $2,359, that is most of the price of the system. On a 5-room 5th Gen multi-zone (from $5,963) the math looks better, since one outdoor unit feeds every room. Check the current fee and terms at mrcoolcare.com before you decide, because programs like this change.
What can void or limit MRCOOL DIY coverage?
All three warranty documents share the same exclusions list. These are the ones we see DIY owners trip over:
- An install that doesn't follow the installation manual, or skips local electrical code and permits.
- Parts not supplied or approved by MRCOOL. Use MRCOOL pre-charged line sets and MRCOOL coupler kits, not a generic line set.
- A serial number label that has been altered or removed.
- A system moved from its original install address.
- Damage from storms, floods, animals or a corrosive environment.
- Failures from power problems, blown fuses or tripped breakers.
- Normal maintenance, such as filter cleaning. That part is on you.
When you file a claim, MRCOOL may ask you to run diagnostics as they direct, and at their discretion they can ask for written proof from a licensed HVAC technician. Keep your install photos and receipt where you can find them.
Does it matter where I buy?
Coverage starts at the proof-of-purchase date, and the Select and EasyPro documents tie it to the original registered owner. A clear receipt for a new system from an authorized dealer is the simplest proof there is. An open-box unit from an unknown seller, or one that was installed somewhere else first, can leave you arguing about dates and addresses.
We are an authorized MRCOOL dealer and sell at MRCOOL's minimum advertised price, so the price you see here is the same advertised price you see at other authorized dealers.
Next: what are the risks of buying MRCOOL from the wrong seller?
What if my situation is unusual?
What if I want the system to last 15 years or more?
Pick the DIY 5th Gen and decide on MRCOOL Care at install time. Seven years on the compressor is the longest standard term of the three lines, and Care is the only path to coverage past that.
What if I live near the ocean?
Salt air is hard on outdoor coils, and the warranty excludes damage from corrosive environments. The EasyPro and 5th Gen have the Gold Fin corrosion coating on the outdoor coil. The Select does not.
What if I only need it for a few years?
A DIY Select from $1,249 makes sense for a garage or a short stay. Spend the difference on a proper pad or wall bracket and keep the filters clean.
What if I need several rooms?
Multi-zone is DIY 5th Gen only, so every room gets the same 5 years on parts and 7 years on the compressor.
What should I do next?
Decide how long you plan to keep the system, then pick the line whose warranty matches that horizon.
