MRCOOL DIY EasyPro Review: The Middle Pick for Real Winters

By the Cool Mini Splits teamUpdated 6 min read

Is the MRCOOL DIY EasyPro worth the extra money over the Select?

Short answer: The MRCOOL DIY EasyPro costs $116 to $238 more than the Select at the same size and adds leak detection, Follow Me, a Gold Fin coated outdoor coil, ENERGY STAR certification on the 12K, 18K and 24K, and a 3-year parts, 5-year compressor warranty. For one room you'll heat through a real winter, it's the line we point most single-room buyers to. Skip it if you need a 36K, several rooms on one outdoor unit or heat below −13°F.

The DIY EasyPro sits between the budget Select and the top 5th Gen. This review covers only the EasyPro: what each of its extra features does in a real house, and who should still pick something else.

What is the MRCOOL DIY EasyPro?

The DIY EasyPro is a single zone inverter heat pump: one white indoor wall unit, one outdoor unit and an 11.5 ft pre-charged Quick Connect line set. As with every MRCOOL DIY system, the refrigerant side needs no vacuum pump, gauges or HVAC tech.

It runs on R-454B, cools at 18.9 to 20.2 SEER2, heats at 8.5 to 9.3 HSPF2 and keeps heating down to −13°F outside. Indoors it drops to 18 dB(A) in silent mode, and you control it from the remote, the MRCOOL app or Alexa and Google Assistant.

Here are the four sizes (prices as of November 2026).

Size Power Price, from ENERGY STAR More than a Select
9K 115V $1,487 No $238
12K 115V $1,599 Yes, plus Cold Climate $200
18K 230V $1,806 Yes, plus Cold Climate $116
24K 230V $2,109 Yes, plus Cold Climate $210

What do the EasyPro's extra features do for you?

Five things separate the EasyPro from the Select. Here is what each one means once the system is on your wall.

Leak detection

The unit watches for signs of a refrigerant leak and tells you. Without it, the first clue is usually a room that won't cool or heat the way it did last season, and by then it may have been running low for a while.

Follow Me

With Follow Me on, the system reads the temperature at the remote instead of at the indoor unit. Wall units hang high, where warm air collects, so in heat mode a unit without it can shut off while your chair is still cool. Set the remote on the end table and the room holds the number you picked where you sit.

Gold Fin coating

The outdoor coil carries a gold-colored corrosion coating. It earns its keep near salt water and in spots where road salt spray reaches the unit.

ENERGY STAR, including Cold Climate

The 12K, 18K and 24K EasyPro are ENERGY STAR certified, including the Cold Climate certification. Many utility rebate programs ask for one or both, so look up your utility's heat pump rebate before you order. The 9K isn't on that list.

Longer warranty

Parts are covered for 3 years and the compressor for 5, against 1 and 2 on the Select. A lifetime option is available too, and it needs registration plus MRCOOL's paid Care program. Coverage is for the original registered owner and includes a DIY install once the system is registered.

Why is the EasyPro the pick for real winters?

To be fair about it: the EasyPro doesn't heat to a lower temperature than the Select. Both stop at −13°F, and the HSPF2 gain is modest, 8.5 to 9.3 against 8.3 to 9.0.

What changes is how the system lives through a cold season. Follow Me keeps the heat where you sit, leak detection warns you before a low charge costs you heat, and the Cold Climate label on three sizes can qualify you for rebates aimed at cold regions. The extra warranty years cover the hours you put on a unit that heats for five months a year.

If your nights regularly drop below −13°F, the EasyPro isn't enough on its own, and neither is any line we sell. Keep a backup heat source or size up, and call us for cold-climate sizing.

How does the EasyPro compare with the Select and 5th Gen?

DIY Select DIY EasyPro DIY 5th Gen
SEER2 (cooling) 16.5 to 17.5 18.9 to 20.2 18.0 to 23.6
HSPF2 Region 4 (heating) 8.3 to 9.0 8.5 to 9.3 8.5 to 11.5
Heats down to −13°F −13°F −13°F
Line set in the box 11.5 ft 11.5 ft 25 ft
Leak detection, Follow Me, Gold Fin No Yes Yes
Warranty, parts / compressor 1 yr / 2 yr 3 yr / 5 yr, lifetime option 5 yr / 7 yr, lifetime option
12K price, from $1,399 $1,599 $2,359

One detail in that table surprises people. The EasyPro's 18.9 to 20.2 SEER2 overlaps the low end of the 5th Gen's 18.0 to 23.6, so for cooling, an EasyPro can match some 5th Gen sizes. Check the single zone specifications for your exact size before you pay for the 5th Gen on efficiency alone.

Where the 5th Gen pulls ahead is heating efficiency (up to 11.5 HSPF2), the 25 ft line set, the 36K size, multi-zone and its 5-year parts, 7-year compressor warranty. The three-line buying guide covers that choice in full.

Is the EasyPro right for your room?

If you can tick every box below, the EasyPro is likely your system.

  • One room, sized at 9K to 24K by our sizing guide.
  • The outdoor unit sits within the 11.5 ft line set in the box, or you've budgeted for a longer pre-charged set.
  • Your coldest nights stay above −13°F, or you keep backup heat for the few that don't.
  • A white indoor unit works for the room.
  • You want more than the Select's 1-year parts coverage, but $960 or more extra for a 5th Gen is hard to justify.
  • You've checked your utility for an ENERGY STAR or Cold Climate rebate.

Watch the line set connection and the outdoor unit mounting; those are the two jobs that take most of an install day.

Who should not buy the EasyPro?

  • Homes with winter lows below −13°F and no backup heat. All three lines we sell stop at that rating, so plan backup heat first.
  • Owners of one big open space that needs more than 24K. Only the 5th Gen comes in 36K.
  • People who want three or more rooms. A 5th Gen multi-zone runs 2 to 6 rooms from one outdoor unit.
  • Buyers who want a black indoor unit. Only the Select offers it.
  • Weekend garages and short-term rentals, where the Select's lower price usually makes more sense.

What if the EasyPro almost fits?

What if my room only needs a 9K but I want the rebate?

Don't jump to a 12K only for the label. An oversized unit cycles more and pulls less moisture out of the air in summer. Size the room honestly first, then compare the rebate against the 9K's lower price.

What if my run is 13 ft?

The 11.5 ft set in the box won't reach, and a pre-charged set can't be cut to fit. Order a longer pre-charged line set in the EasyPro's pipe size, plus a coupler kit if the run calls for joining two; check the line set chart in your manual for the exact part. It adds a few hundred dollars, and an EasyPro with a longer set still costs less than a 5th Gen of the same size.

What if I add a second room next year?

Another EasyPro is a complete separate system with its own outdoor unit. That works well for two rooms on different sides of the house.

What to do next

Size the room, measure the line set path and check your utility's rebate list. If all three point to the EasyPro, pick your size and order; it ships free to the 48 contiguous states, leaving our Kentucky warehouse in 2 to 4 business days after the order is verified.

Questions people ask

Is the MRCOOL DIY EasyPro ENERGY STAR certified?

The 12K, 18K and 24K EasyPro are ENERGY STAR certified, including Cold Climate. The 9K is not.

What does Follow Me do on a MRCOOL mini split?

Follow Me makes the system read the room temperature at the remote instead of at the indoor unit. Put the remote where you sit and the unit holds your setpoint there, not up by the ceiling.

Does the MRCOOL EasyPro have leak detection?

Yes. The EasyPro and the 5th Gen both have refrigerant leak detection. The DIY Select does not.

What is the warranty on the MRCOOL DIY EasyPro?

Three years on parts and five years on the compressor for the original registered owner, with a lifetime compressor option through registration and MRCOOL's paid Care program.

How cold can the MRCOOL EasyPro heat?

The EasyPro heats down to −13°F outside, the same as the Select and 5th Gen. For colder places, keep a backup heat source or size up, and call us for cold-climate sizing.

Can the EasyPro run more than one room?

No, the EasyPro is single zone only. For 2 to 6 rooms on one outdoor unit you need a DIY 5th Gen multi-zone system.
