MRCOOL Mini Split Systems Review 2026: Pros and Cons of Each DIY Line

By the Cool Mini Splits teamUpdated 5 min read

Are MRCOOL DIY mini splits any good?

Short answer: MRCOOL's DIY systems do what they promise: a handy homeowner can install one without refrigerant tools, and it heats and cools with very little noise indoors. The weak spots are the parts not in the box, the electrical work that often needs an electrician, and on the Select, a short warranty. Our verdict: the Select for tight budgets and light use, the EasyPro for most single rooms, the 5th Gen for several rooms, big spaces or long ownership.

This MRCOOL mini split systems review looks at performance, installation and service across the three DIY lines we sell in 2026. Each gets its own pros, cons and a plain verdict.

How did we put this review together?

We sell all three lines, so we won't hand out star ratings; we'd be grading our own shelf. What we can give you is a fair read built from the spec sheets, the warranty documents and the questions buyers bring us before they order.

Where a line is the wrong buy for someone, we say so. That's the part of a review you can actually use.

What do MRCOOL DIY systems do well?

These strengths hold for the Select, EasyPro and 5th Gen alike.

  • Pre-charged Quick Connect line sets. You thread the fittings on, open the valves and the refrigerant side is done, with no vacuum pump, gauges or HVAC visit.
  • Heat and cooling in one unit. Every line is an inverter heat pump that keeps heating down to −13°F.
  • Low indoor sound. Silent mode drops the indoor unit to 18 dB(A), low enough for a bedroom.
  • Control from your phone. The MRCOOL app works over Wi-Fi, along with Alexa and Google Assistant.
  • Current refrigerant. All three lines use R-454B, which is replacing R-410A in new equipment.

This is the step that makes the whole system DIY, and it is the same on all three lines.

What do buyers complain about?

Most of the frustration we hear is about things the buyer didn't expect. Know these five before you order.

Parts you still have to buy

No system includes the disconnect switch, the whip, a pad or wall bracket, a line set cover, or the wire and breaker from your panel. From our store that's $59 (prices as of November 2026) for the disconnect, $72 for the whip and $127 to $172 for a bracket or pad, plus $129 if you want a LineGuard cover.

The electrical side

"DIY" covers the refrigerant side. The dedicated circuit, breaker and disconnect are work that many states and towns require a licensed electrician for, and permits typically run about $50 to $300.

Fixed line set lengths

Pre-charged line sets can't be cut. If yours is longer than the run, you coil the extra neatly, which some people find untidy. The Select and EasyPro ship with 11.5 ft, so a run past that means buying an extra set.

Weight and freight

Outdoor units are heavy and awkward; two people make mounting much easier. Systems ship from Kentucky, often by freight, and you need to check every box before you sign.

Ordering the wrong size

A change-of-mind return loses the 3% card fee, shipping both ways and MRCOOL's 10% restocking fee. Size carefully first; it's the most expensive mistake on this list.

Next: Which of the three lines fits your home?

DIY Select review: is the cheapest line any good?

What's good: The DIY Select starts from $1,249 for a 9K, the lowest entry into MRCOOL DIY. It installs exactly like the others, runs on 115V at 9K and 12K, and it's the only line offered in black.

What's not: It has the lowest efficiency (16.5 to 17.5 SEER2, 8.3 to 9.0 HSPF2), no leak detection, no Follow Me and no Gold Fin coating. The warranty covers parts for 1 year and the compressor for 2.

Verdict: Buy it for a garage, shop, rental or sunroom in a mild climate. Skip it near salt water, for a room that relies on it as the main heat, or if you'll keep it past the warranty and want coverage. Full details are in our DIY Select review.

DIY EasyPro review: is the middle line the best value?

What's good: For $116 to $238 more than a Select, the DIY EasyPro adds leak detection, Follow Me, a Gold Fin coil, ENERGY STAR certification on the 12K, 18K and 24K (including Cold Climate), and 3 years on parts with 5 on the compressor. Its 18.9 to 20.2 SEER2 matches some 5th Gen sizes.

What's not: It's single zone only, tops out at 24K, comes only in white and still ships with an 11.5 ft line set. Heating stops at −13°F, like the Select.

Verdict: For one bedroom, office or living room you'll use year-round, this is where we'd put our own money. Skip it if you need several rooms, a 36K or heat below −13°F.

DIY 5th Gen review: is the top line worth it?

What's good: The DIY 5th Gen has the best efficiency (up to 23.6 SEER2 and 11.5 HSPF2), a 25 ft line set in the box, DIYPro armored cable that needs no conduit, and the longest warranty: 5 years on parts and 7 on the compressor. It's the only line with a 36K single zone, ceiling cassettes and multi-zone systems for 2 to 6 rooms.

What's not: Price. A single zone runs $960 to $1,430 more than a Select of the same size. Multi-zone systems also take more planning: each room needs its own line set, each run is capped at 75 ft, and there's a total line set limit per outdoor unit.

Verdict: Worth it if you'll use what it adds: more rooms, a big space, cold winters or ten-plus years in the house. For one small room near the outdoor spot, it's more than you need.

How do the three lines compare at a glance?

Line Price, from Best for Main drawback Our verdict
DIY Select $1,249 Garages, rentals, mild climates 1 yr parts / 2 yr compressor warranty Good value for light use
DIY EasyPro $1,487 One room you heat and cool all year Single zone only, 24K max Best pick for most single rooms
DIY 5th Gen $2,329 Multi-room, 36K, cold climates, long ownership Highest price Worth it when you use what it adds

What if you've read bad MRCOOL reviews online?

Read them closely. Many trace back to things that have little to do with the unit itself.

  • Oversized units that cycle too much and leave the room clammy.
  • Line sets kinked while being bent into place, or fittings not tightened as the manual says.
  • Systems that were never registered, leaving the owner with less warranty than expected.
  • Purchases from sellers who aren't authorized MRCOOL dealers.

Register your system after install, follow the manual on each fitting and buy from a dealer MRCOOL lists. Our article on where to buy MRCOOL explains why the seller matters for your warranty.

What if something goes wrong after install?

Warranty and technical problems go to MRCOOL support at support.mrcool.com, and the manuals and warranty PDFs are on our manuals page. Our phone line is for sizing and choosing a system, not for troubleshooting.

What should you do next?

Pick the line from the verdicts above, then size the room. If you want a second opinion on the line or the size, call +1 (844) 999-9725, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM EST, or text 302-385-6142.
