Mitsubishi vs MRCOOL: which mini split should a DIY homeowner choose?
Short answer: Mitsubishi is a premium brand sold and installed by HVAC contractors, best known for its cold-climate models and a 12-year parts and compressor warranty through its Diamond Contractors. MRCOOL DIY is the system you install yourself, at a much lower total cost, with a shorter warranty. Pick Mitsubishi for contractor-designed, whole-house heat in hard winters, and MRCOOL DIY for one to six rooms you'll install yourself.
We sell MRCOOL DIY, so read this knowing where we stand. We'll still tell you plainly when a Mitsubishi installed by a good contractor is the better buy, because for some homes it is.
How do you buy a Mitsubishi mini split?
Mitsubishi Electric's residential systems in the US are sold through HVAC contractors. Its top tier of installers is the Diamond Contractor network, which goes through Mitsubishi's training and qualification program.
A Diamond Contractor visits your home, looks at the rooms, the layout and whether you need single zone or multi-zone, and gives you a quote. They size the system, mount both units, make the refrigerant connections on site, and start it up.
Mitsubishi's line is wide: wall units, floor units, ceiling units and ducted air handlers, single zone and multi-zone. Its H2i cold-climate models are the reason many people in cold states ask for Mitsubishi by name. They are built to keep heating well below zero.
How do you buy a MRCOOL DIY mini split?
You order it from an authorized dealer like us, and it ships to your house. The line sets come pre-charged with R-454B and close with Quick Connect fittings, so there's no vacuum pump, no gauges and no HVAC tech on the refrigerant side.
We carry three lines, always in this order from lowest to highest price:
- DIY Select, from $1,249 (prices as of November 2026): 9K to 24K, 16.5 to 17.5 SEER2, heats to −13°F.
- DIY EasyPro, from $1,487: 9K to 24K, 18.9 to 20.2 SEER2, leak detection, ENERGY STAR on 12K, 18K and 24K.
- DIY 5th Gen, from $2,329: 9K to 36K, 18.0 to 23.6 SEER2, multi-zone for 2 to 6 rooms, and ceiling cassettes.

Be fair to the Mitsubishi column: 12 years on parts and compressor is longer than any DIY line we sell. The MRCOOL lifetime compressor option needs registration and MRCOOL's paid Care program.

Why is the total cost so different?
With Mitsubishi you're paying for premium equipment and a trained installer's day, or several days on a multi-zone. That's a real service. The contractor carries the risk of the install, and you get one phone number when something goes wrong.
With MRCOOL DIY, you supply the labor. A DIY 5th Gen 12K for a room up to 550 sq ft is $2,359. Add a disconnect switch ($59), a whip ($72), an equipment pad ($172) and a LineGuard cover kit ($129) and the parts come to $2,791. Then add your electrician and a permit, which typically runs about $50 to $300.
Ask a Mitsubishi contractor for a written quote on the same room and compare the two numbers. We won't guess at their price here, because it changes a lot by region and job.

- Your winter lows stay above −13°F, or you keep a backup heat source for colder nights.

What if your home is a special case?
What if I live where it hits −20°F every winter?
Every MRCOOL DIY line keeps heating down to −13°F outside. Below that, keep a backup heat source or size up, and call us for cold-climate sizing. If this is your only heat for the whole house, also consider having a Mitsubishi contractor quote a full cold-climate design.
What if I want five or six rooms on one outdoor unit?

What if the outdoor unit has to go on a second-story wall?
That's a ladder-and-scaffold job with a heavy unit. Plenty of homeowners hire a handyman for that one step. If you don't want anyone on a ladder at all, a contractor-installed system is the easier path.
What if I already have a Mitsubishi in one room?
A MRCOOL DIY in another room works on its own outdoor unit and its own app, so the two never interact. You can mix brands room by room without trouble.
